In March, 2011, I had disc surgery for a badly herniated L4/L5. It went very well but I wanted the best possible physical therapy to recover my strength and flexibility. Wendy Price was my first thought. She had taught me Pilates a few years prior, and I knew her current practice combined Pilates and physical therapy. It has been perfect. In seven weeks, I have progressed from a nerve-damaged weakling who could barely stand on one leg to someone able to stand tall (on one or two legs!), carry things, drive, work—and go to the gym. Wendy’s unusual background combining medicine and Pilates was perfect. She taught me functional exercises and principles that have allowed me to monitor myself at the gym, work, and home, all without a moment of pain. She reined in my tendency to overdo things, and her intelligent, practical approach has not only taught me, but changed me. I’m smarter about using my body, particularly my back, and am deeply grateful for Wendy Price’s help.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer October, 2009. My whole world turned upside down. I was confused, full of anxiety, and most of all scared. My mind as well as my body ached. After being informed that I had to have chemotherapy, which was to make me feel tired if not exhausted; I was angry. I took aerobic classes twice a week and a yoga class once a week. I was active and always kept busy. My goal was to find an exercise program that was somewhere in between the two. A friend of mine mentioned to me that a friend of hers, Wendy Price, had just opened up a Pilates/physical therapy studio in Woodbridge, CT, and she thought that it was exactly what I needed to stay in shape during treatments and beyond. As I entered Healthcore, I felt relaxed and calm. Soft music was playing, all the equipment was clean, and the studio was decorated with earthy colors. Wendy sat down with me and we discussed a work out plan. She was very informative and well educated in both Pilates rehabilitation as well as physical therapy. She made me feel comfortable and ready to fight this awful sickness.

Not being familiar with Pilates was a little intimidating, but I was ready to learn and persevere. My first session with Wendy went very well. Pilates works your arms, legs, shoulders, thighs, and most importantly, your core. Pilates stretches make you feel firm and give you a sense of balance. As my treatments progressed, so did my fatigue. Some days my willingness to attend a Pilates session was overcome by my tiredness and lack of desire. I forced myself to go and I was always glad I did. After stretching different parts of my body, it felt energized and my mind was in focus.

My treatments ended in April and I am still enjoying my sessions with Wendy. We are now concentrating on strengthening my shoulders for my upcoming bi-lateral mastectomy. All in all, Pilates has been a wonderful experience for me, and I look forward to expanding my Pilates training

Very Fondly,

I originally started working with Wendy to try to regain strength in my shoulder after I separated it in a horseback riding accident. I had ignored the doctor’s orders to stop riding, and as a result suffered constant and at times almost unbearable pain in my shoulder for months. I had been hesitant to try physical therapy, as I had tried regular physical therapy for other injuries in the past, and found it to only exacerbate the problem. After just a few weeks of working with Wendy however, the pain in my shoulder subsided and I can honestly say it has been almost completely pain free for months! As well, I realized quickly how incredibly beneficial Pilates is in many other facets of my life.

Six years ago I was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis, a disease similar to rheumatoid arthritis, and have struggled since with varying levels of pain and stiffness, which at times have left me bedridden for days or longer. Having tried a variety of exercise regimes designed specifically for people with illnesses similar to mine, I thought I had done all I could for myself in that realm. I was functional, and although I dealt with certain levels of pain on a daily basis, I was resigned that this was just how my life was going to be. Thankfully, I was wrong! Within only a couple sessions with Wendy and following the program she designed for me at home, I found that the back pain I had suffered on a daily basis for as long as I could remember, was almost completely alleviated, and that I found myself looser and more pain free on a regular basis. Now when I am having a bad day arthritically, I know which Pilates exercises to do to make myself feel better instantly. As well as fixing my shoulder and helping me tremendously with my condition, Pilates has done wonders for my horse back riding. Position faults that I have tried desperately to fix for years are now almost completely remedied, and I find myself able to execute commands better as a result of my newfound strength and body awareness. As well, I had considered myself pretty physically fit upon beginning with Wendy, as I completed an hour plus of grueling workouts a day when feeling well, but let me tell you, just that one hour session with Wendy per week, plus me following the program she designed for me at home which takes me no more than half an hour has me feeling fitter than I think I ever have! All and all, my experience with Wendy has been fantastic, and I cannot even express how grateful I am to her and how much I would recommend her to others!

I am writing to you to thank you for all of the tools you have given me to make me feel good. I still cannot get over how simple the stretches and exercises are that help! Thankfully, you had the foresight to specialize in oncology patients.

When Dr. Silber asked me if I wanted to go to physical therapy, I said yes! It didn’t occur to me that physical therapy would help all the aches and pains I was feeling due to being pushed into menopause by chemotherapy. Everything ached – my arms, elbows, shoulders, back, thighs, knees. I felt like I was 90! I was really scared I would feel like that for the rest of my life! I felt broken.

I was confident you would help me because Dr. Silber said that she had patients feeling as I did, come back (after having physical therapy with you), feeling great – and I do! I started running and just completed my first 5k! I am planning to run another 5k in January or February.

Thank you for all that you do!

Sincerely,
Pamela Roach

After I had my third baby, I suffered a back injury that left me unable to walk for four months. Needless to say, it was incredibly hard on my family. Not only was I in amazing amounts of pain each day, I was slowly losing hope of recovery. After the injury happened, I went into physical therapy at another facility but it ultimately left me in worse shape because it seemed to aggravate my injury. The doctors were telling me that I should seriously consider surgery and that is when I started to become aggressive in thinking about all options. A friend out of state told me about a similar experience she had had and that I should consider Pilates rehabilitation. When I started working with Wendy, I was a mess in so many ways, both emotionally and physically. Wendy gives me the perfect mix of support and encouragement and I am so much stronger now because of the work that I have been able to do with her in Pilates. Pilates rehabilitation is magic because it strengthens muscles without pain or risk of re-injury. A year later, I am living without pain and thinking about playing tennis again. It has been a long journey and I can confidently say that I would not be where I am without Wendy. I am forever grateful.

I am a huge fan of Wendy Price. She is a terrific instructor. Two years ago I broke my shoulder in four parts in a horseback riding accident. After a couple of surgeries and months of rehabilitation, my physical therapy at another facility came to an end. Although my shoulder was treated properly, I still experienced weakness and inflexibility. I tried various fitness routines and even returned to physical therapy. What I really wanted was a fitness regimen that would help me transition from rehabilitation to true wellness. Wendy developed a unique Pilates exercise plan just for me that has helped me build greater core strength and flexibility. Thanks to my improved upper extremity strength and flexibility I have been able to start playing tennis. Wendy’s professional expertise in physical therapy and Pilates makes her uniquely qualified and very understanding. I highly recommend her and Healthcore.

As a result of my twin pregnancy I developed rectus diastasis and lower back pain. While I exercised regularly post-pregnancy, nothing seemed to tighten my stomach muscles. Thankfully a friend of mine who is a physical therapist recommended that I schedule a few sessions with Wendy. Through her Pilates-based approach Wendy showed me several exercises that I could easily do at home. Right away I noticed that my lower back pain had disappeared and overtime my core strength has increased. I now have a better awareness of my posture, as well as which exercises will help my rectus diastasis and which exercises – such as crunches – will further aggravate the problem. Wendy is very knowledgeable and personable. Working with her has made me feel like I have control over my body again.

After my c-section I had serious weakness in my abdomen and lower back. I knew that core strengthening was what I needed, but my back pain could be so intense I didn’t want to go it alone. I loved that Wendy combined pilates with PT. Her exercises and instruction have been something I was able to work on long after my last appointment. I do the pilates mat exercises she taught me at the gym or on my own and I’ve enjoyed a much stronger core and little back pain since then.

Wendy provides excellent individual attention. She is a superb Pilates instructor and she always gives positive reinforcement. She has been instrumental in improving my core muscle groups, as well as upper and lower body strength, which is great preparation for my upcoming college soccer season.
